Introduction

 

In this assignment, the birth weights of babies born to smokers and none-smokers will be compared.   Some background information is already given in “Stat Labs: Mathematical Statistics through Applications” text book about the average weights of newborn babies. Furthermore statistical information such as number of smoking mothers, none-smoking mothers, their babies’ weights are also given at the website link “http://www.stat.berkeley.edu/users/statlabs/labs.html” and will be used as reference for this assignment.

 

The Data

 

Number of Births: 1237

Number of Births to Smokers: 485

Number of Births to None-Smokers: 742

Number of Births to Smoking Status Unknown: 10

Average Birth Weight of a Healthy Newborn: 5.5-8.8 lbs (88 – 140.8 ounces)
